*Updated April 2016 with the DJI Phantom 4 and the DJI Matrice 600*

What is currently the best drone with a camera? For professional photographers who need absolute best quality aerial footage without risk, the answer WAS actually two DJI Inspire 1 Pros for redundancy. This was because the Inspire 1 Pro provided high performance combined with ease-of-use at a reasonable price, yet as a first generation product it was simply plagued with reliability issues, requiring a spare drone if you required absolute reliability. That was the awkward situation before, but now the best drone for pro photographers has changed to the DJI Matrice 600.

The DJI Matrice 600 is a straight upgrade over the Inspire, providing better reliability on the proven Matrice drone platform, a wide array of camera and gimbal options, and better performance. There are even optional add-ons that further increase the drone’s reliability and accuracy by adding additional A3 flight controllers and sensors for redundancy. You can get the standard Matrice 600 with the same Zenmuse X5 camera the Inspire Pro uses for only $6800. This is a much more convenient and less expensive option than two Inspire Pros for $9000. And the Zenmuse X5 is only one of the most basic camera options. The Matrice 600 can support cameras all the way up to the Red Weapon or Arri Alexa mini.

a3 flight controller

The six included batteries are all under 100 Wh, so you can legally travel with as many of the smaller batteries that you can fit in a carry-on. That is huge. Right now if you have a heavy lift drone, you have to ship the batteries to where you plan on going. The Matrice 600 also features the new A3 flight controller, Lightbridge 2 transmission system, and retractable landing gear.

The Matrice 600’s A3 flight controller can be upgraded to the A3 Pro by purchasing two additional A3 sets. The three sets of units compare flight data and will automatically switch over to another unit in the event of a failure. With the A3, the drone can land safely even in the event of a propulsion system failure of up to three propellers, making it extra safe and providing extra protection to the attached camera. There are many countries that require redundancy, so having this option is important abroad.

The Matrice 600 uses DJI Lightbridge 2 wireless streaming to support video output at up to 1080p/60fps or a broadcast standard output of 720p/59.94fps and 1080i/50fps. It has a flight time of up to 37 minutes with a Zenmuse XT camera or 16 minutes with a full 6 kg payload, and with a maximum transmission range of 5 km.

If you aren’t searching for the most cutting-edge drone and camera combination, and are willing to settle for the next best thing, for much less, then the DJI Phantom 4 is the drone for you. The other Phantom 3 drones have their niches as will be explained later, but the new 4 series really takes the cake with little downside. If you want a serious drone experience, then the Phantom 4 series is the benchmark. If you are very hesitant about drones and just want a reliable and inexpensive one to try out or give as a gift, then you can’t go wrong with a Syma X5C quadcopter or the now price-reduced Phantom 3 Standard.

Follow along for a detailed analysis of which drone best suits you.

dji inspire drone
DJI Inspire 1 Pro

The DJI Inspire 1 Pro is an advanced and user-friendly ready-to-fly drone with a camera. It includes a remote and can be flown for around 15 minutes with the included rechargeable battery. It is the best drone on the market for professional photographers and videographers, in large part due to its state-of-the-art gimbal-stabilized micro 4/3 camera and advanced flight features.

The big benefit of the Inspire 1 Pro is the big gimbal-stabilized micro 4/3 camera sensor, that is unobstructed by the landing legs, since they automatically retract on takeoff.

The Inspire 1 Pro alleviates the pains between buying a drone and capturing the professional footage you desire. There is no need to buy the custom components, build the drone, then set it up, as it is already comes pre-built. It includes state-of-the-art sensors and software that makes flying it feel very easy and natural. This also allows it to hover in place and automatically return home on command. In fact, using advanced software features such as waypoints and point-of-interest, you can leave all the flying to the drone while you focus your attention on capturing footage with the camera. Custom camera drones do not have anything like these advanced features at the moment. Most do not even let you switch between video and still photos while the drone is flying.

Ignoring the multitude of fake five star Amazon reviews and focusing on more honest reviews and forum experiences, they paint a picture of a class-leading first-generation product facing first-generation product issues. So if your job is on the line and you absolutely need the shot, then having a backup DJI Inspire 1 Pro is a must. Or just move up to the Matrice 600 or down to the Phantom 4 for much improved reliability.

The reliability issues aside, it is actually cheaper, more user friendly, and frankly higher quality then the previous professional photographer favorite, the DJI Spreading Wings S800 Evo (RTF) with a GH4 and 12-35mm lens, which comes in at about $12000 + taxes. It was the highest quality drone with a camera setup you could get before spending tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on super-customized drone with camera rigs. But now the Inspire 1 Pro beats it not just in ease of use and functionality, but even in picture quality.

dji inspire zenmuse x5 drone

The GH4 still has an advantage in 4k video bitrate of 100 Mbps compared to the Inspire 1 Pro’s 60 Mbps, but the Inspire 1 Pro overcomes that advantage with its better gimbal-based image stabilization. The GH4 footage must be run through post-production stabilization to even come close to the same level, which significantly degrades video quality as well. And that doesn’t even take into consideration the Inspire 1 Pro’s ability to change from video to still pictures on the fly instead of on the ground, and the plethora of customized flight and video paths available to the Inspire 1 Pro.

With the S800 and GH4 you can’t switch from filming to taking photos whilst in the air which is very frustrating. Also there is minimal control over the camera settings as well. The Inspire 1 Pro is a game changer in this department. There is no “setting and praying” on the ground with the Inspire 1 Pro, like there is with the GH4. The Inspire feels like a better machine in all ways to fly, and does everything in a smaller package. It has fewer reported gimbal issues than the Z15-GH4 gimbal as well.

The Inspire 1 Pro comes with the new Zenmuse X5 camera and uses self-retracting legs to give a full 360 degrees of occlusion-free video. Combined with its ease of use and plethora of flight and camera features, you can just let it loose and film the most beautiful scenes and photographs.

One feature I love about the Inspire 1 Pro is the sensor its Zenmuse X5 camera uses. It is a micro 4/3 sensor, which makes it around 10x the size of the regular Inspire 1 Zenmuse X3 camera and Phantom 4 cameras. This allows the Zenmuse X5 to collect much more light and detail than the cameras with smaller sensors, especially in scenes without much light.

User Comments: “I am very pleased with my third unit. Everything works and I have logged quite a bit of time on it. The camera quality is by far the best in this class. The controls are very easy and the gimbal they developed is spot on for what you would expect. This is like a first year car model though, there will be a bug or two along the way and I am sure they haven’t all been found yet. Longevity of the units is yet to be proven as well due to it still being new on the market relatively speaking. The ipad/droid software is by far the best I have personally ever used too. There are a couple of features that are not available yet like Home Lock and POI (I believe they call them that) but that does not stop the enjoyment of what is already bundled. Beyond the words I put previously I would say to simply follow the instructions and treat it like a real plane/chopper and do the checklists every time.”

“This is not a toy…and if you need a toy…there are MUCH cheaper options. But if you need a high-end aerial camera platform…this is your pick. The camera on this thing is just awesome. Night shots are beautiful and very easy to take without much post-processing. I am very pleased with it and you will be too.”
“I have a Phantom 3 Pro and have owned one since it was released. It’s OK, but it does not compare to an Inspire when it comes to video capabilities. It’s decent for stills, but I much prefer the Inspire for anything moving. Having the ability to change lenses alone on the X5 makes it worth the upgrade price IMHO, the boost in dynamic range and overall image quality is just icing on the cake.

Overall I’m extremely impressed with the X5, it’s a massive step up from an X3 in a lot of ways. Just because the camera is more capable does not mean it’s for everyone though. I shoot with a GH4/S1000 kit a lot and in my opinion, the X5 will replace that kit 90% of the time. For stills, the X5 is an improvement over flying a GH4. For video, I would say it is on par with the GH4 but having full manual control of the camera from the ground put it’s up a massive level.

If you’re willing to put the work in, the X5 will reward you with better looking shots. If you’re just going to take off and hit record, then the X3 might actually give you better results some of the time.”

Inspire 1 Pros issues, as reported in numerous reviews and on forums: Defective gimbals, video cards, batteries, unreliable software, issues with Android tablets, need most current firmware before flying, no-fly zones (airports, government areas, etc.), waiting 5-6 weeks for drone issues to be fixed, first generation product with first generation issues, and not aerodynamic in crosswinds greater than 10 knots when compared to the Phantom 3 fuselage shape

dji phantom 4 drone 3

DJI Phantom 4

The DJI Phantom 4 is the most user-friendly drone that follows you. It takes the already great Phantom platform to all new levels by giving it up to 28 minutes of flight time (5 minutes longer), a new top speed of 20 m/s (a 25% boost), and giving it cameras to help it sense and avoid obstacles automatically. When the cameras sense an obstacle in front of the drone, it stops automatically in front of the obstacle. The cameras and new processing chip also give the Phantom 4 the ability to follow you around just by selecting yourself on the screen. These improved features and more make it by far the best Phantom drone model yet.

The Phantom 4 take all the great features of the Phantom 3, and both improves them and makes them more accessible to drone pilots of all levels, from beginner to pro. The automatic obstacle-avoiding camera sensors and the redundant dual IMUs and compasses dramatically reduces the risk of crashing, letting you focus more on having fun exploring the world and recording better photos and video.

The big benefit of the Phantom 4 is that it’s the first major semi-autonomous drone in existence. This gives you peace of mind while piloting it, and provides you with great features such as TapToFly and Follow Me.

The Phantom 4 largely takes away the pain of worry while you are piloting your drone. You no longer need to worry as much about flying directly into objects both while you are piloting it, or when you command it to automatically return to its takeoff point. The dual IMUs and compasses also help take away the pain of sensor failure, which was sometimes an issues on earlier Phantom models. Lastly, the extra battery life lets you relax and have more fun on your drone flights.

New Features to the Phantom series

Feature #1: Optical Sensors for automatic obstacle-avoidance
-Benefit: The Phantom 4 automatically avoids obstacles in front of it while you are actively piloting it, and when you order it to automatically return to its takeoff point

Feature #2: Up to 28 Minutes of Flight Time with Included Battery
-Benefit: The Phantom 4’s bigger 81.3WH 5350mAh battery and other efficiency improvements help give it up to 28 minutes of flight time.

Feature #3: 25% faster speed and Sport mode
-Benefit: You can now activate Sport mode and pilot the Phantom 4 at up to 20 m/s.

Feature #4: Redundant IMUs and Compasses
-Benefit: Adding redundancy to the sensors should significantly reduce many sensor-related errors and provide more stable flights.

Feature #5: Better 4K Camera Lens and 120 fps shooting modes
-Benefit: The new camera lens reduces distortion by 36% and chromatic aberration by 56% when compared to a Phantom 3, allowing the camera to take even better images and footage. It also features a new 1080p120 video mode, which lets you take full HD video at 120 fps, providing even smoother video and slow motion video opportunities.

Feature #6: Push-and-Release Propellers
-Benefit: The new prop mounts let you mount each propeller more quickly and securely than before.

Feature #6: TapFly mode
-Benefit: In TapFly mode, simply tap on the live view on your smart device screen to send it flying in that direction. With Obstacle Sensing Systems you can watch it fly without worry.

Feature #6: ActiveTrack mode
-Benefit: In ActiveTrack mode, whether you are running, driving, rafting and more, the Phantom 4 uses an advanced combination of computer vision, object recognition and machine learning to track you as you go. Circling a moving object used to only be achievable by the most seasoned of pilots, now everyone can do it with a flick of the thumb. The entire time that ActiveTrack is running obstacle avoidance is too, so it will decide whether it should continue following, avoid an obstacle or simply stop.

Bonus: Phantom 4 BINGO Predictions

I made an article predicting which user-requested features the Phantom 4 might incorporate. I managed 2 successful predictions and was just 2 more away from a BINGO. Maybe I will have more success next year with Phantom 5 BINGO.

dji phantom 3 professional drone 04

DJI Phantom 3 Professional

If you don’t need the most bleeding-edge drone with a camera, but want the next best thing, with more than twice the reported reliability, for a fraction of the price, then you want the DJI Phantom 3 Professional. It is the top model 3rd generation drone from the DJI Phantom series. It can capture high quality gimbal-stabilized 4K video and 12.4 MP stills. Andy Knight from DJI has said the camera is the exact same as the regular Inspire 1, just re-housed to fit the Phantom 3 Pro. The Pro model also allows you to receive real time video from your remote at a smooth 10 Mbps bitrate, and includes a faster 100 W charger.

The Phantom 3 Pro delivers most of the cutting-edge drone features out on the market today such as gimbal-stabilized 4K video, smooth 10 Mbps video transmission to the remote, and advanced automatic flight waypoint features. But it also manages to do all this and still get around a solid 23 minutes of flight time per battery.
The big benefit of the Phantom 3 Pro is it provides most of the advanced features of the Inspire 1 Pro drone, minus the higher quality camera sensor and self-retracting legs, but at a fraction of the price, and with over twice the reported reliability of the first-generation Inspire drone.
The Phantom 3 Pro takes away much of the pain and problems that higher end first-generation drones like the Inspire 1 have with their first-generation teething issues, as the Phantom 3 is now in its proven third generation. Analyzing reviews and reports on Amazon and drone forums (and ignoring the potentially fake reviews), the Phantom 3 has less than half the percentage of reported problems and negative reviews of the Inspire 1.

On the other side of the drone market, the Phantom 3 Pro takes away the pain of rolling the dice with buying cheaper drones with poor-quality fixed VGA cameras, buggy video transmission or none at all, unable to hover in place without constant corrections, and more prevalent hardware and software glitches. The great majority of the time, the Phantom 3 you buy JUST WORKS. It predictably and reliably does what you want it to do, all while capturing beautiful and smooth scenes with its 4K camera.
